TDI-Brooks and B&B Laboratories recently teamed up to present a glow-themed workshop “Get Your GLOW On” for over 30 Girl Scouts from Central Texas eager to learn more about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The virtual event took place on Saturday, October 24th where we provided scientific demonstrations.
The presentation highlighted all areas of science: physics, chemistry, and biology! Mike Gaskins, Megan Konarik, Cienna Kirkland, Amanda Brewster, and Shannon Smith gathered their knowledge and experiences to talk about the properties of light, how glowsticks work, why petroleum fluoresces under UV light, what makes fireflies light up the evening, and how the different kinds of luminescence play a role in scientific careers that they could be a part of in the future.
Presenters also conducted various experiments to demonstrate a variety of chemical properties, such as influence of temperature on a chemical reaction, defining a chemical reaction, the concepts of polarity and density, and atomic excitation/relaxation (light emission) through fluorescence.
Even though the event was virtual, the team wanted to make sure the girls were still able to participate, so kits were mailed to the participants beforehand with supplies to conduct an experiment along with the presenters. Although this workshop was long distance, it was not short on an all-around great experience!
TDI Brooks, along with our laboratory affiliate B&B Laboratories, maintain a state-of-the-art laboratory facility in College Station, Texas that provides high-quality analytical services and scientific interpretation which specializes in petroleum geochemistry, surface geochemical exploration, oil spill response, environmental chemistry, and environmental assessments. Our environmental, geochemical, and geotechnical laboratories are staffed with highly skilled chemists and engineers who have worked in partnership with federal and state agencies as well as the private energy and environmental industry for over 20 years.
